“Tilling Our Soil”
Fr Michael Rasicci’s homily for the 7th Sunday after Pentecost, 07/16/2023, Calvary Episcopal Church, Batavia, IL
In the first lesson today, Esau sold his birthright for a plate of lentil stew and some bread. In the second lesson, Paul tells the Romans that (through Baptism), the Spirit of Christ is in us and will raise us from the dead through the Spirit within us. In today’s Gospel, Jesus Christ speaks of the sower of seed and the soils the seed falls on. Esau’s soil was not the “good soil” Jesus speaks of.
As baptised Christians, it is up to us to till our soil so that it is fertile ground for the Word of God . . .”as for what was sown on good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.” (Matthew 13: 23)
