Jesus Christ Was Lifted Up to Save Us
Fr Michael Rasicci’s homily for the 2nd Sunday in Lent, 03/05/2023. 03/05/2023, Calvary Episcopal Church, Batavia, IL.
Abram’s faith led him to the action that fulfilled God’s promises. God counted Abram’s faithful response to what God had ordered as righteousness. For the promise that he, Abraham, would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. Through our baptism, we are also heirs to Abraham’s faith.
In a conversation with Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a leader of the Jews, Jesus told Nicodemus “And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.”
Lent is a time for reflection and renewal, of finding ways of coming closer to God through sacrifice or focus. We have all “been bitten” by snakes of the devil. Now is the time for repentance, sacrifice, and renewal of faith.
(Readings: Genesis 12: 1-4a; Psalm 121; Romans 4: 1-5, 13-17; John 3: 1-17)
