Disciple–Take Up Your Cross and Follow Me
The Rev Dr Markus Johnson’s homily for the 14th Sunday after Pentecost, 09/03/2023, Calvary Episcopal Church, Batavia, IL.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus’s response to Peter stands in direct contrast with Jesus’s response to Peter last week after Peter shares that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah.
Today, after Peter’s outburst that nothing bad should happen to Jesus,, Jesus corrects him, “Get thee behind me, Satan.” He was telling Peter to let go of his worldly desires not to see his friend mistreated and to look to the divine, where Jesus must fulfil the prophesies about the Messiah. Jesus tells Peter and the Disciples to “Deny self, take up your cross, and follow Me.”
