Who Do You Love? Putting Christ First
Fr Michael Rasicci’s homily for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost, 09/04/2022, Calvary Episcopal Church, Batavia, IL
In today’s Gospel, Jesus recounts the high cost of discipleship. When he uses the word “hate”, the word in Greek means to hold these people or things to be of lesser value that Christ. Jesus is telling the crowd that, to be a disciple, they must put Christ first above all else.
In the first lesson, Jeremiah is told by God that God will destroy or remake Israel if the people don’t change their ways.
Paul’s letter changes the status of his messenger from a run-away slave to a Christian brother.
Working with the Holy Spirit , Christ is remaking us as we live our lives. We need to put our focus on Christ and to imitate him in our daily lives.
(Readings: Jeremiah 18: 1-11; Psalms 139: 1-5, 12-17; Philemon 1-21; Luke 14: 25-33)
